PLA, PETG or ABS: where to start?
First the project. Then the material. A short guide for your next print.
In this article
PLA: first models
PLA is often a convenient choice for decorative objects, models and first prints: it is relatively easy to print and reproduces detail well. Standard PLA is sensitive to heat and is less suited to impact loads.
PETG: everyday objects
PETG is often chosen for holders, enclosures and everyday functional parts. It offers good layer adhesion and toughness. Stringing and overhangs need attention to settings.
ABS: technical parts
ABS suits technical applications where impact resistance and higher-temperature performance matter. It is prone to shrinkage; an enclosure and suitable ventilation help establish appropriate printing conditions.
Test your result
These are general characteristics of material families. A finished part also depends on geometry, layer orientation, settings and printing conditions. Test a prototype in its intended environment before using it for a demanding application.
